about

this song is called hangman because the method we used to write it was much like playing a game of hangman. we started with a rhythm and filled the letters in. At the end of the song you can hear the empty rhythm in its original state, prior to being filled in.
It's true, it really happened. We named the song after this approach in the hope that other bands might take a leaf from our book and begin to utilize this methodology. We wanted to break away from the 'math rock' genre we seemed to be being (wrongly) bracketed in with at the time and get people making 'game rock'. Sadly it never took off and the misconception prevailed that the song had something to do with capital punishment, when it's actually all about penguins.

lyrics

in super mario world there's a bit where you have to race a giant penguin down a twisting ice tunnel. This song is about that race.
